hydration
I'm feeling better today. I may have been dehydrated yesterday. I made an effort to drink water today.
My workout was still light. I was on the exercise bike for 20 min and rowed for 10. I wanted to do some weights but the gym was to busy. All I did was Lat Pulldowns.

Cookies and Milk
I've been working out fairly regularly but took a day of yesterday, well not really. I was on my exercise bike for 20 minutes.
My workout today was not great. I had a stressful day at work and was hoping my workout would relieve the stress, it didn't. I'm feeling pretty grumpy.
I ran for about 20 or 25 minutes and used the rowing machine for 10. That's it. i then went home and had a couple of cookies and milk.

Excercise Plan and Progress
My plan is to go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week.
There is one nearby that has an indoor track that is 228 meters / lap. I started out by running for 10 minutes, then a rowing machine for 10 minutes. I then would go straight to the weights and do a mini circuit hitting the major muscles. I took no breaks in between exercises.
Now, I usually run for 20 minutes, go straight to a rowing machine and do that for 10 to 20 minutes. I also occasionally squeeze in cycling on a Lifecycle exercise bike for 20 min as well as 2 sets of the weight circuit. Once a week I'd do everything a little longer.
I have definitely improved in these few weeks at it. I am also starting to feel better
I have lost 5.6 pounds since January 1st.

Diet
I'd like to outline my diet. It is very simple. I call it "My Fist Diet". I can eat as much fruit and vegetables as I like but limit my meat and carbs like bread, pastas, rice and potatoes. The total volume of meat and carbs combines I allow is the size of one of my fists per meal, hence the name. That is 3 meals per day plus a mid morning and afternoon snack.
I'm not sure if I came up with this "fist" idea originally or if heard about on tv or something,,, I just did a quick Google search for "Fist Diet"; from the results i can see it probably wasn't my idea but I still like the concept.
I also keep a can of slimfast handy to replace the occasional evening meal. I throw a scoop of the stuff plus a banana, ~175 ml of plain yogurt, top it off with milk and occasionally a spoonful of peanut butter in a blender and make a delicious meal replacement shake. My wife and kids love them too.
As mentioned in my earlier post, I am also abstaining from alcohol. This cuts allot of calories out of my diet and helps me rest more soundly at night.

The reason for this Blog
My reason for making this blog:
This blog will be my fitness diary. I am hoping it will keep me motivated to improve my physical self.
But first some history:
Like most people, there was a time when I was in pretty good shape. It was about fifteen years ago. I was in my mid to late twenties. I had a physical job and I commuted every day on my bicycle. I enjoyed my fitness immensely. When I wasn't working I would be out on the trails on my mountain bike or training for marathons. At one time I was 155 pounds and in the best shape of my life.
I don't know what exactly happened, but somehow it changed. I fell out of that wonderful lifestyle and started getting FAT. My weight climbed up to 215 pounds at one point (January 2005). That made me get motivated and I lost about 20 to 25 pounds through diet and exercise, and even trained for, and finished, another marathon.
That marathon was not very enjoyable though. I didn't have a good solid base prior to beginning the training and I was still fairly heavy; about 190 pounds. That extra weight really beat up my feet, knees and hips. After the marathon and recuperating I tried to get back into it again but I just couldn't. I stopped training and my weight started it's climb again.
Fast forward to Christmas 2006, I peaked at 207.4 pounds. This disgusted me and I made a new years resolution. Lose 50 pounds and get back in shape.
How I planned to accomplish this was to start going to the gym, follow a sensible diet and by not consuming alcohol. The alcohol part is only until I reach my goal. I love beer and wine and I believe they have a place in a healthy lifestyle if consumed in moderation. This will be a bit of a reward for me if I reach my goal. Also feeling better and having more energy will be the ultimate reward.
Wish me luck
